The network's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
