Outrage Erupts as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Criticism
Figures from both sides of the political spectrum and the Hollywood world are uniting to denounce former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Online Post
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to describe the late director as "tortured and suffering". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bond was set at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.
“What a vile and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the remarks. She pointed to prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his political party to justify the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally after the shooting of another individual.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once recounted the story of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
