New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” Glenn remarked. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD released video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of Texas University in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
