Weather experts are saying a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow likely across much of the UK. Revelers have been told to wrap up as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Proceed Amid Alerts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are planned to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so warmer clothes will be needed," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. The mercury are due to be low, so extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

The Mercury Set to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are predicted to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Medical Advisories Activated

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this meant the weather was likely to trigger notable consequences across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.

The guidance for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, preparing for winter conditions is utterly essential.
