LA Experiences Record-Breaking Heat Just One Week After Major Winter Storm.
Following a week of significant rainfall that resulted in floodwaters across areas in the city, LA is now confronting unseasonably high temperatures for late February.
Record-Shattering Heat
During the day Friday, the temperature climbed to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, according to the National Weather Service. This breaks the old record for this date, which was 88°F (31°C) and was established in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were labeled on official maps for the region.
Safety Advisories
Forecasters cautioned that Friday's weather posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their recommendations included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon hours of the day.
- Not leaving children or pets unattended in a car.
A Dramatic Reversal
This sudden spike in mercury arrives just after a powerful winter storm that battered the region recently. That system delivered high winds, thunderstorms, and significant snowfall to mountainous regions, causing mudslide risks for many residents.
Tragically, the severe weather also resulted in a massive avalanche in the Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Forecast Ahead
Looking ahead cooler conditions will arrive. Temperatures were predicted to drop to around 61°F (16°C) in downtown LA by overnight.
Other locales that hit 90°F included Burbank, Woodland Hills, and Long Beach. Elsewhere, Westwood, Camarillo, Santa Maria, and Oxnard were projected to experience the high 80s.
Over Saturday and Sunday, downtown LA can see readings in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the week ahead.
