In a significant escalation, Kyiv's forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to target and hit a key Russian oil refinery. This strike was carried out Thursday, as stated by the Ukrainian military authorities.
Attack Particulars and Strategic Impact
The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was said to be hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the site. This marks not the first instance where Ukraine has utilized these advanced British-supplied missiles to hit objectives inside Russian soil.
Ukrainian officials emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk facility acts as one of the primary providers of petrol products in southern Russia and is actively engaged in providing for the military of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the Conflict
Separately, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Thursday that he held “very good” discussions with representatives of ex-President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The conversation centered on potential pathways to end the war.
“We had a really good conversation: numerous specifics, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy wrote on a social media platform. “There are some new ideas on how to bring real peace closer, and it involves approaches, potential summits, and, certainly, the schedule.”
Legal Crackdown Inside the Country
Meanwhile, in a domestic matter, a court in Russia has found guilty a pro-war activist and opponent of Vladimir Putin on charges of justifying terrorism. Sergei Udaltsov, leader of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in a penal colony.
The charges are said to be based on an article Udaltsov shared in support of another group of Russian activists accused of forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has rejected the allegations as fabricated and, following the verdict, stated his intention to begin a hunger strike in defiance.
Foreign Prisoner Case
Russian authorities indicated it is engaged with French authorities regarding the fate of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a prison term in Russia and allegedly facing new charges of espionage.
An official said that Russia has made an offer to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” President Emmanuel Macron’s office confirmed he is closely following the situation, with all government services mobilised to provide consular support and push for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Mariupol
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was leveled in a devastating bombardment while hundreds of civilians were sheltering in its cellar, is set to open its doors again. Russian occupation authorities have promoted the rebuilding as a sign of renewal.
However, previous staff from the theatre have denounced the planned opening as “dancing on bones.” This project is part of a broader Moscow effort to present its administration in seized territories, a process that includes the detention or expulsion of critics and confiscation of assets from local residents.
It is expected to open by the end of the month with a performance of a Russian fairytale, having been rebuilt largely anew over the past two years.
